Description of Cardamom Essential Oil

Also known as cardamom, the reed-like Elettaria cardamomum is a perennial herb with long, tapering leaves growing to nearly 15 feet in height. Its little flowers are yellowish and purple and produce oblong seeds that are reddish-brown in color. It is from the dried seeds that Cardomom Essential Oil is extracted via steam distillation.

Native to the tropical regions of Asia, cardamom is widely cultivated in India, Sri Lanka, Laos, El Salvador and Guatemala. Our Therapeutic-Quality Cardamom Essential Oil is cultivated in Guatamala. This clear to pale yellow oil has a warm, sweet and spicy fragrance with a woody undertone, blending well with most spice oils, frankincense, rose, sweet orange, bergamot, ylang ylang, cedarwood and neroli.

Cardamom Essential Oil Uses

Aromatherapists have claimed that cardamom essential oil is useful for routine digestive system issues and also has tonic properties.

In Chinese medicine, cardamom herb (not the essential oil) was traditionally popular for respiratory issues such as coughing and sinus or chest congestion. It was also used for stings and bites of insects.

Familiar to most as a common spice in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine, Cardamom has a history thousands of years old not only in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, but Western medicine as well. Hippocrates suggested Cardamom herb (not the essential oil) for abdominal pains, coughs, nervous disorders, and more. In addition to its common usage for lung and digestive complaints, Ayurvedic medicine holds that Cardamon herb has a purifying effect that brings clarity, joy, and raises consciousness.
