Organic Argan Oil

Argan Oil, Organic remains one of the most difficult oils to produce involving a time-consuming, labor-intensive process of several steps. To extract the kernels which yield the oil, local Moroccan workers collect the fruits which are either dried in the open air or processed mechanically to remove the fleshy pulp. Two types of Argan Oil are produced: cosmetic and culinary. Traditional processing methods call for roasting the nuts for the production of culinary Argan Oil but as this destroys some skin nutrients, nuts are not roasted for producing cosmetic Argan Oil. Artisan Aromatics’ Organic Argan Oil is a cosmetic type and the nuts have not been roasted so as to preserve the skin-nurturing properties. To remove the oil from the nuts in either case, the nuts are ground and the mixture is doused in water and pressed, causing the oil to float to the top. The oil and water mixture for our cosmetic Argan Oil is then filtered through an organic cotton sieve to remove nut debris and the pure oil is separated from the water by decanting. Our pure Organic Argan Oil may contain some sediment. This is a natural part of the production process and does not affect quality.

According to Jan Kusmirek (Liquid Sunshine:Vegetable Oils for Aromatherapy), Argan Oil has good skin softening qualities and is suitable for damaged and mature skin. Here’s what Jan says: “It is best identified for use in cosmetic creams and milks, especially of the richer type, or for its nutritive properties around the eye area. I have found it an indifferent massage oil except on skin that shows signs of premature aging, sun damage, and the more mature skin prone to wrinkles”.

Safety Considerations: Argan Oil may irritate some people’s skin when applied topically. Even though Argan Oil comes from a stone fruit (rather than a true nut), irritation is most likely to occur when used by people who have nut allergies so we recommend avoiding Argan Oil of any type if you are allergic to nuts. Our Organic Argan Oil is processed for cosmetic use and should not be used for cooking or other methods of internal consumption.
