Cistus Absolute (Labdanum)
Cistus Absolute (Cistus ladaniferus) from France (also known as Labdanum) is a wildcrafted natural aromatic oil that is solvent-extracted from the concrete which is produced from twigs and leaves. Widely used as a fixative/base note in perfumery, it has a tenacious, intense, rich and warm balsamic aroma with herbal notes and a persistent ambergris-like undertone. It blends beautifully with most other aromas and works especially well in fragrances of the chypre type.
Quality
Like all of our Artisan Aromatics pure essential oils, enfleurage oils, absolutes and blends, this oil has been carefully selected for its therapeutic quality. Then, to ensure maximum freshness and potency, this pure oil is bottled by hand in USA only after orders are received.
Cistus is a perennial shrub native to the Mediterranean region. It can reach over six feet in height and all parts of the plant exude a highly scented resin called labdanum. This resin has been harvested for over 3000 years and was highly prized by ancient perfumers. Today, cistus essential oil is distilled from the flowers, while the absolute is produced by solvent extraction from the leaves and twigs.
Cistus Essential Oil Uses
Like other solvent-extracted absolutes, Cistus Absolute has not been widely used in aromatherapy and it’s main uses are in perfumery. Another oil that is often used in perfumery is Celery Seed Oil.
SAFETY: Cistus absolute is a potential irritant of skin, eyes and respiratory tissues. Use in a diffuser is not recommended. Maximum recommended usage level in a fragrance concentrate is 9% (note: a fragrance concentrate is never applied to skin without further dilution; a fragrance concentrate would typically comprise 2 to 6% of a finished fragrance product). If you want to enjoy the fragrance of this oil in a homemade perfume, we recommend a maximum 0.5% concentration of it in either vegetable oil (for roll on or solid perfumes) or perfumers’ alcohol (for traditional perfumes and colognes). Because the aroma of cistus absolute is strong, a little goes a long away and will impart a rich natural sweetness to many perfume blends.  NOTE: a 0.5% concentration is achieved by adding 5 drops of cistus absolute to one ounce of vegetable oil or perfumers’ alcohol.
