Clove Leaf Essential Oil
Clove Leaf Essential Oil (Eugenia caryophylatta) from Madagascar is Therapeutic Quality Essential Oil steam distilled from the leaves. The color is clear yellow to dark brown and the consistency is relatively thin. The note is middle and the strength of the aroma is medium. It’s scent has the characteristic Clove smell, only it is much sharper than Clove Bud Oil with woodsy tones.
Clove leaves come from an evergreen tree growing up to twelve feet in height. It is believed to have originate in Indonesia.
Clove Oil Cautions
All Clove Oils are a bit harsh and need extra dilution. Clove leaf oil less harsh than clove bud oil. The recommended dilution rate for clove leave essential oil is 0.5% to 0.6% while dilution rate from the harsher clove bud essential oil is 0.1% to 0.2% depending on source. Note that the recommended dilution rate for most essential oils is 2.5%. It can cause skin irritation in some individuals and should be used in dilution. It should also be avoided during pregnancy.
Clove Essential Oil Uses
Clove Bud Oil is a natural analgesic and antiseptic used primarily in dentistry for its main ingredient eugenol but this Clove Leaf Oil contains less eugenol than that oil the clove bud and generally has less eugenyl acetate and other minor constituents.
Clove was on of the earliest spices traded. It has been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times.
Although Clove Bud Essential Oil, aka Clove Oil, is often used for tooth pain, it is a major skin irritant, while this Clove Leaf Oil is less of a skin irritant.
