MENTHA PIPERITA / FAMILY: Lamiaceae
DESCRIPTION AND BOTANICAL INFORMATION: Peppermint is a hybrid cross between water mint and spearmint. Mentha x piperita is the classic peppermint that has the strong, minty smell and taste and it is often grown in gardens as a culinary and/or therapeutic herb. This is the peppermint that can be found in dinner mints and candies. The United States produces the most peppermint essential oil. However, peppermint is also produced in places like Italy, Morocco, and Eastern Europe.
FOLKLORE AND HISTORY OF USE: The name Mentha comes from Greek mythology. Minthe was a nymph who tried to make sexual advances towards Persephone’s husband, Pluto. As a result, Persephone transformed Persephone into “a sweet smelling herb to be trampled underfoot.”
Peppermint has been in use for centuries. In the Ebers Papyrus from Egypt, which dates to about 1500 BC, peppermint is mentioned by name. Peppermint was cultivated by the ancient Egyptians and the ancient inhabitants of China and Japan. Historically, peppermint was used in many parts of the world for digestion, cramps and nausea. In European folklore, peppermint was said to stimulate visions and dreams.
EXTRACTION: Just before maturity, the flowers and leaves are removed. About 2 pounds of essential oil can be steam distilled from about 600 lbs. of fresh plant material.
CHARACTERISTICS: The essential oil is clear to pale yellow or pale olive green. It has a strong, fresh minty aroma. Be sure to store the oil properly. Otherwise, the oil color can become dark, and the oil can become a thick resin. Peppermint can overpower other aromas which can make it hard to use for blends.
