Rose Geranium Essential Oil aka Geranium Essential Oil, Rose

Rose Geranium Essential Oil (Pelargonium roseum) from France is 100% Pure and Natural Essential Oil steam distilled from the leaves and flowers.

With its beautiful, heavy sweet aroma and nuances of rose, French Rose Geranium Essential Oil is a premium choice among the different categories of “Geranium” essential oil available on the market. Our French Rose Geranium essential oil is steamed distilled in small quantities and is one of the best we have ever found.

Note: For a less expensive but quite good alternative to our exquisite French Rose Geranium, you might like to try our Rose Geranium Essential Oil – USA – it’s great for making soaps and such.

In general, the properties of Rose Geranium essential oil are considered by aromatherapists to be mostly the same as those of Geranium essential oil and both have been described as aromas that usually have a “relaxing” effect, although a few people are said to find them stimulating. Most aromatherapists feel that the aroma of Rose Geranium essential oil is superior to that of Geranium, due to richer rose notes.

Historical Uses

The Pelargonium species that produce Geranium and Rose Geranium essential oils were not much used in traditional European herbal medicine and there has been frequent confusion among aromatherapists about the properties of the types of “geranium” that were used by herbalists and the properties of the Geranium essential oil that is sold on the market today. For a fuller discussion of this issue, see our product description for Geranium (Egypt).

Prior to today’s use of Geranium and Rose Geranium essential oil in aromatherapy, the plants that produce these essential oils were used as herbs in the traditional medicines of the Zulu and Hottentot tribes in their native range.

Again, see our product description for Geranium (Egypt) for more information.

Safety Information

The European Union has classified the Geranium essential oils as strong skin sensitizers, although Tisserand and Young (2014) reviewed studies on this issue and their opinion is that they are more appropriately classed as having a”low risk” in this regard.

Do not exceed 1.5% concentration in vegetable oil for topical use, avoid frequent topical use, and do not use on damaged, sensitive or irritated skin.

Some authors recommend avoiding this oil in pregnancy and in the presence of estrogen-dependent cancers/conditions; these recommendations are not found in Tisserand and Young’s Essential Oil Safety: Second Edition (2014).

There is a significant risk for drug interactions between Geranium essential oil used by the oral route and diabetic medication as well as medications such as cyclophosphamide that are metabolized by CYP2B6 enzymes. We strongly caution against oral use of any essential oil.
