About Spike Lavender Essential Oil

Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia) Essential  Oil is also referred to as Aspic Oil or even Spike Oil. The plant is common throughout the Mediterranean where it grows wild.  In the wild setting, hybridization often occurs between Spike Lavender and True Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia).

Note: All information on this page, above and below,  is provided for educational interest only. Nothing here is intended to make claims for our product “Spike Lavender Essential Oil”. Your experiences with an essential oil may differ from any one else’s  experiences.  No information provided here is intended to be used for the diagnosis or treatment of any physical or mental illness. Please pay attention to the safety information provided below in order to insure that your experiences with this product are good ones.

The aroma of Spike Lavender is similar to that of True Lavender but sharper, more penetrating and less floral. Its penetrating camphor-like nuances are commonly compared to eucalyptus and rosemary but it also has some low, woody notes that make it a bit softer than these others. Aromatically, Spike Lavender blends well with Eucalyptus, Rosemary, other Lavender varieties and with pines and firs. Some of the natural constituents are linalool, linalyl esters, cineol, pinene, camphor, terpene alcohols, and geraniol.

Because Spike Lavender essential oil contains more of the natural constituent  known as camphor than does True Lavender essential oil, it’s reported properties are notably different. While True Lavender Essential Oil is claimed to be relaxing and supportive of sleep, Spike Lavender is said by aromatherapists to be stimulating and not as well suited to promoting relaxation and decreasing stress. On the other hand, Spike Lavender Essential Oil has been claimed to be a better choice than True Lavender for easing aches and pain and for addressing respiratory complaints. It has also been said to have stronger antiseptic properties than True Lavender.

Generally speaking, true Lavender Essential Oil is claimed to be best suited for use in calming anxiety and stress or promoting sleep. Spike Lavender Essential Oil, on the other hand, is said to be much better suited for aiding the lungs and easing aches.

How to Use Spike Lavender Essential Oil

Spike Lavender Essential Oil has strong actions and we prefer to use it in small amounts. It can be stimulating, so we recommend that you avoid using it in the evening ( or whenever you will be wanting to sleep soon).

Spike Lavender essential oil is appropriate for both inhalation and use on the skin. For a steam inhalation, a single drop is all you need, For diffusion in a room, we suggest a maximum of three drops on the pad of a simple fan diffuser. To use in an aroma inhaler, use up to 3 drops. To rub into the body, dilute this essential oil in vegetable oil or jojoba to a maximum concentration of 2.5%.  To achieve this concentration, add 23 drops of Spike Lavender essential oil added to one ounce of vegetable oil or jojoba.

To use Spike Lavender Essential Oil in a bath add a maximum of 3 drops to one tablespoon of vegetable oil, jojoba, or Castile Soap and gently stir this mixture into warm bath water. If you use vegetable oil or jojoba, the tub will be slippery so be careful.

Safety Considerations

Due to its high camphor content, Spike Lavender essential oil has strong actions and may be mildly neurotoxic. Those with epilepsy and other neurological conditions should avoid use of this essential oil except under the guidance of a properly trained health care professional. We do not feel that this is a good essential oil to use with children, the elderly, or frail individuals. Some people may find this essential oil to be more stimulating than desired, especially as the amount used increases. Use sparingly for best results; 1 to 3 drops per use will be sufficient for most applications. Please read and follow general precautions for essential oil use provided via the link below.

Lavender Essential Oil Kit

Test your nose with this Lavender Essential Oil Kit. Can you tell the difference between these six different types of Lavender? All are 100% pure & natural but each is a bit different from the others, sort of like wines are different if grown in different regions or under different conditions even if type/variety of grape is the same.
