Spruce Essential Oil Black

Description: Spruce Essential Oil Black (Picea mariana) from Canada is Wildcrafted Therapeutic Quality Essential Oil steam distilled from the needles. It has a clean, coniferous aroma with balsamic top notes and sweet, earthy undertones reminiscent of the deep. green forests where it grows.

Herbal preparations of Black Spruce have reportedly been used in traditional cultures to address body aches and pains and as a remedy for respiratory complaints. The resin has been used in the tree’s native range as a chewing gum, while both cones and needles have been utilized for making therapeutic salves and tea. Aromatherapists have described the essential oil as potentially having grounding and calming effects.

We like to use Spruce Essential Oil in small amounts for inhalation and application to the skin. For inhalation, a drop or two in a low-output diffuser (such as a fan diffuser) is all you need; or, include it as one ingredient in a blend with other essential oils and use the blend in your diffuser. It can also be used, alone or as part of a blend, for a traditional steam inhalation; again, one or two drops is all you need. Spruce Essential Oil can be used for application to sore muscles, or as an application to the chest and throat so that it’s vapors will rise up and reach the respiratory system: for these uses, dilute it in vegetable oil to a maximum concentration of 1% (this is equal to 9 drops of the essential oil in one ounce of vegetable oil). We don’t recommend this oil for use in a hot bath since heat may increase the risk of sensitization if the oil has become oxidized.

Safety Information:  Spruce essential oil may produce skin sensitization if oxidized (spoiled). Careful storage is a must (in dark bottles, caps on tight, stored away from heat, direct light and moisture); storage in the refrigerator is encouraged to extend shelf-life. We suggest discarding unused oil after three months of unrefrigerated storage or at any time that proper storage guidelines have not been followed.
