Geranium Bourbon Essential Oil
Geranium Bourbon Essential Oil (Pelargonium graveolens) from Reunion is Therapeutic Quality Essential Oil steam distilled from leaves and flowers. This is a premium selection of Geranium with a beautiful, floral aroma graced with rich rose notes.
Geranium Bourbon was traditionally the name given to the essential oil extracted from Pelargonium graveolens grown on the island of Reunion, which was formerly a French holding known as Bourbon. A so-called Geranium “Bourbon” is now also produced in Madagascar.
Geranium, Geranium Bourbon and Rose Geranium have somewhat different aromas but nearly identical properties (see our product description for Geranium Egypt).
SAFETY INFORMATION
The Geranium essential oils have been classified as strong sensitizers under European Union regulations. Tisserand and Young (2014) have disagreed with the EU decision and state that they believe Geranium essential oils are best characterized as having a low risk for producing skin sensitization. A prudent approach would be to use this essential oil at a maximum dermal concentration of 1.5% and avoid frequent use or use on sensitive, fragile, or damaged skin.
Some authors have cautioned against using Geranium essential oils during pregnancy or in cases of estrogen-dependent cancers or other estrogen-dependent complaints.
When taken by the oral route, Geranium essential oils pose a strong risk of drug interaction with diabetic medications, as well as medications such as cyclophosphamide that are metabolized by CYP2B6 enzymes. We do not recommend taking ANY essential oil by mouth.
