    Roman Chamomile Hydrosol/Flower Water

Roman Chamomile Hydrosol is very soothing and relaxing. It soothes rashes and makes an excellent toner for dry skin; it is sometimes combined with Witch Hazel for this latter use. The aroma of our Roman Chamomile Hydrosol is quite like that of our Roman Chamomile Essential Oil yet with a hint of the smell of a grassy meadow. Given its soothing and relaxing properties, many enjoy combining this hydrosol with Witch Hazel for use as a facial toner for dry and/or irritated skin. We recommend our alcohol-free Witch Hazel Distillate for this purpose.

Please Note: Hydrosols have a shorter shelf life than essential oils and therefore we make it a practice to source in small batches and replenish our stock often. To extend the shelf life of your Roman Chamomile Hydrosol, we recommend refrigerating or storing in a cool dark area. Plus, spritzing a Hydrosol that has been chilled can feel extra refreshing!

    Hydrosols – so many names:

Hydrosols have quite a few different names; hydroflorates, hydrolats, distillates, floral waters and most commonly, flower waters.

While the term ‘flower waters’ has been applied by some suppliers to hydrosol products, it is important to be aware that there are some on the market selling an inferior version where the supplier has simply added small amounts of essential oil to water rather than producing the hydrosol through true authentic distillation methods. It goes without saying that ‘flower waters’ created in this way do not possess the same desirable properties as true hydrosols.

True hydrosols are produced during the process of steam distillation of essential oils. Plant material is placed in a still along with water followed by applying heat to produce steam. This steam extracts the oils from the plant material, is condensed (liquefied) resulting in the essential oils floating to the top of the water. Upon separating out the pure essential oil, the water that remains contains traces of essential oil along with some non-volatile constituents that were also extracted; this is the hydrosol.

    Uses of Chamomile Flower Water

Roman Chamomile Hydrosol is very soothing and relaxing. It soothes rashes and makes an excellent toner for dry skin; it is sometimes combined with Witch Hazel for this latter use. You can also use in your diffuser, or as a base for lotions and other emulsions.

    Roman Chamomile – the Plant:

Roman Chamomile is a small, fragrant, hairy-stemmed perennial herb with white daisy-like flowers. Its Latin name is Chamaemelum nobile or Anthemis nobilis, and it is also known as “English Chamomile” or “True Chamomile.” Long considered a wonderfully comforting herb, Roman Chamomile Flower Water has many soothing applications for both the mind and the body.

Beware: There are companies out there that make fake hydrosols. They just add a few drops of essential oils or even fragrance oil to water. This is not a hydrosol. Ours are 100% pure, created during the essential oil distillation process.
