About Lemon Essential Oil
Lemon Essential Oil (Citrus limonum) from Italy is Therapeutic Quality Essential Oil produced by cold expression of the peel of the lemon.
The familiar lemon fruit grows on a small evergreen tree that reaches 9 to 19 feet high with pale green leaves and highly perfumed white and pink flowers. One lemon tree can produced up to 1,500 lemons each year.
As with all citrus trees, the lemon tree originated in Asia. It made it’s way to Greece in the second century AD and now grows throughout the Mediterranean and other warm climate regions. Florida and California are now the major producers. The peel was used in the Roman empire to fragrance clothing and repel insects. In the late 17th century a pharmacist named Nicholas Lemery recognized the medicinal value of the fruit. The British Navy used large quantities of lemons to counteract scurvy on sea voyages.
Traditional Use of Lemon Essential Oil
In traditional Oriental medicine Lemon Essential Oil is cool and dry and is believed to clear heat, dampness, and phlegm. It has also been described as benefitting the Intellect and easing worries.
According to some modern aromatherapists, Lemon Essential Oil is helpful for improving circulation and toning the blood vessels. Proponents of aromatherapy also claim that it has antiseptic properties and when diluted makes a good spray for cleansing the home environment.
We also offer a six of our Artisan Aromatics citrus oils boxed together: Citrus Oil Collection.
Expressed Lemon essential oil is phototoxic, which means that it can cause severe sunburn if applied to the skin prior to exposure to ultraviolet light; therefor, it should not be used on the skin or in applications where steam may deposit it on the skin for 12 hours prior to exposure to sunlight or tanning lamps. Lemon Essential oil that has been allowed to oxidize (spoil) can cause skin sensitization (a bad skin reaction); for this reason we recommend that you refrigerate your Lemon Essential Oil if you plan to keep it for more than 3 months and in all cases be sure to keep it in a dark, tightly capped bottle, away from heat, light and moisture.
Be sure to follow General Safety Guidelines for essential oils. Essential Oils must be diluted before being applied to the skin.
