Safflower Oil

Carthamus tinctorius (High Oleic)

Safflower Oil (Carthamus tinctorius) is extracted from the seeds of the flowering head of the safflower plant. Its production is relatively recent, starting in the mid to late 20th century. I especially like this oil for use on the skin, and as a carrier for essential oils, as it has very little odor.

The Safflower plant itself has an older history of use than the oil and has been cultivated for millennia as food, for making dye and for its decorative blooms.  Garlands of Safflower blooms were found in the tomb of  the ancient Egyptian King, Tutankhamen. There is also evidence that the ancient Mycenaean Greeks wrote about Safflowers on the Linear B. tablet. In Tibet the Safflower has long been prized for it’s crimson colored dye. Many of the world’s cuisines use Safflower as a Saffron substitute for food coloring and as a flavoring ingredient.

Safflower Oil is an odorless and colorless vegetable seed oil which works very well as a carrier oil, especially for the dilution of essential oils for the purpose of topical application, or as a massage oil for those who are sensitive to even slight odors.

Do not ingest carrier oils with essential oils blended into them.
