Witch Hazel Distillate – No Alcohol

Witch Hazel Distillate (alcohol free) is a clear liquid with a light fresh aroma steam distilled from the dried twigs of the Witch Hazel tree Wiki Witch Hazel.

Native Americans used extract of witch hazel, Hammamelis virginiana, extensively as a remedy. Many people produced witch hazel extract by boiling the stems of the shrub and producing a decoction. Early Puritan settlers in New England adopted the use of witch hazel from the natives, and its use became widely established in the United States.

A missionary, Dr. Charles Hawes, learned of the preparation’s alleged therapeutic properties, and then determined through extensive study that the product of distillation (likely steam distillation) of the plant’s twigs was even more efficacious. The North American species are occasionally called winterbloom.

Essential oils can be added to Witch Hazel Distillate or Witch Hazel Distillate plus water to make sprays, like a Lavender linen spray.

    Lavender Linen Spray
    1 part Witch Hazel Distillate
3 parts water (distilled water is best)
8-10 drops Lavender Essential Oil (per 4oz water/witch hazel mix)

    Directions
Put all in spray bottle and shake well. Essential oils will just float on water but, diluted in the witch hazel or alcohol and shaken, the oils will mix into the water blend, at least temporarily.

Three species of witch hazel are native to North America. The most common, Hamamelis virginiana, grows widely east of the Mississippi river.
