Hyssop Decumbens Essential Oil

Hyssop Decumbens Essential Oil (Hyssopus decumbens) is a Therapeutic Quality Essential Oil from Spain extracted by steam distilled from the whole plant.

Description: Hyssop is a perennial shrub from seven to 22 inches in height, will small leaves and purple-blue, pink or white flowers. The flowers attracts swarms of bees and butterflies. It is native to southern Europe and now grows wild throughout Europe, Russia, and North America.

Historical Uses: Hyssop decumbens essential oil is considered less harsh that its cousin, Hyssop officinalis. Various species of Hyssop herb have been used in traditional and folk medicine since ancient times and “Hyssop” is one of the bitter herbs mentioned in the Old Testament that was used to purify the temple. The name Hyssop derives from it’s ancient Hebrew name ezoh, which mean holy herb. The Romans used Hyssop herb (not the essential oil) as protection against the plague and the ancient Greeks valued Hyssop herb for it’s expectorant action (Note: the actions of a plant when used as an herb do not necessarily apply to the essential oil). It was planted in medieval gardens with the essential oil being distilled for use in sauces and soups as well as in liqueurs such as Chartreuse (we do not recommend ingestion of essential oils).

Historical information is provided for educational interests only and is not intended to make claims for the actions of this product. Use of an herb or essential oil in traditional or folk medicine does not constitute “proof” of its actions.

Safety: According to Tisserand and Young (2014), no safety hazards have been reported for this essential oil; general precautions (see below) do apply.
