About Blood Orange Essential Oil (aka Orange, Blood Essential Oil)

The beautiful and exotic Blood Orange from Italy is a special variety of Sweet Orange that produces a distinctively colored fruit with crimson-tinged flesh. The essential oil that is extracted from the Blood Orange peel has similar properties and uses to regular Sweet Orange Essential Oil but it’s fresh, citrus aroma is often described as deeper, richer and sweeter than that of “regular” Sweet Orange Essential Oil.

Your experiences with an essential oil may differ from any one else’s  experiences.  No information provided here is intended to be used for the diagnosis or treatment of any physical or mental illness. Please pay attention to the safety information provided below in order to insure that your experiences with this product are good ones.

The distinctive color of the fruit of the Blood Orange is said to be due to the presence of anthocyanins, which are antioxidant pigments common to many flowers and fruit, but uncommon in citrus fruits. In order for the fruit to develop its striking color, the nighttime temperatures must be fairly low. In some cases, the rind, as well as the flesh, will exhibit the dark coloring and in general, the rind of the blood orange is tougher and harder to peel than that of other oranges.   Blood oranges have a unique flavor compared to other oranges, being distinctly raspberry-like in addition to having the familiar orange taste.

The Blood Orange tree is loved not only for it’s fruit and the intensely aromatic essential oil produced from the fruit rinds, but also for its attractive appearance in warm-climate landscapes where it’s notable for its verdant green foliage and stunningly scented white flowers that have a long season of bloom.

According to aromatherapists,  the aroma of Blood Orange essential oil may help to impart a feeling of comfort and warmth while still being refreshing and uplifting. Give it a try and see what you think.

How To Use Blood Orange Essential Oil

Blood Orange essential oil can be used for both topical application and inhalation, although we especially love it for inhalation. For topical application, dilute Blood Orange Essential in a suitable vegetable oil (such as Grapeseed or Almond Oil) before applying to the skin. A maximum concentration of 2.5% Blood Orange Essential Oil is recommended for topical use: this concentration can be achieved by adding 23 drops of the essential oil to 1 ounce of vegetable oil ( or 7 drops essential oil to 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil). For adding to a warm bath, mix 1 to 3 drops of Blood Orange Essential Oil with a tablespoon of whole milk or vegetable oil and add this mixture to the bath: stir in with your foot before entering the bath and be careful not to get the bath water in your eyes. Vegetable oil will make your tub slick so take care not to fall if you use this method.

Blood Orange is a wonderful addition to many all-natural perfume compositions and it blend well aromatically with a great many other essential oils; we especially like it with cardamom, clove and lavender.  Consider experimenting with Blood Orange the next time you’re making essential oil rolls-ons or inhalers and try substituting it for regular Sweet Orange.

Blood Oranges and Blood Orange Essential Oil in Traditional Medicines

Various varieties and all parts of the Sweet Orange tree were widely used in the traditional medicines of the Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Asian regions and countries. According to the folklore of these regions, traditional uses of various preparations of orange and blood orange included: as a tonic; in cases of anxiety or stress; as a detoxicant; for constipation;  and for stomach upsets. Modern practitioners of Chinese Medicine and aromatherapy, such as Gabriel Mojay, have described the essential oil as having these characteristics and actions when viewed from the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine:

ENERGY: Neutral Temperature and Neutral Moisture

MAIN ELEMENT:  Wood

ACTIONS:  Unblocks and Circulates Qi

Relieves Stagnant Liver Qi

Stimulates Digestion

According to Mojay, Sweet Orange’s ability to move stagnant Qi enables it to be helpful in relieving stress and frustration and this is one of it’s main uses in aromatherapy.  Properties and uses of Blood Orange Essential Oil would be expected to be similar.

While we can’t promise that all these traditional claims will prove to be true, we can tell you that we believe Blood Orange Essential Oil is a good choice for those times when you’d like to lift your mood, ease your mind and enjoy a sense of refreshment. Try and see for yourself – and let us know what Blood Orange Essential Oil does for you!
